The Working Group on Numerical Experimentation (WGNE), jointly established by the WCRP Joint Scientific Committee (WCRP-JSC) and the WMO Commission for Atmospheric Sciences (CAS), which is responsible for WWRP and GAW, has the responsibility of fostering the development of atmospheric circulation models for use in weather, climate, water and environmental prediction on all time scales and diagnosing and resolving shortcomings.
The Working Group for Predictability, Dynamics and Ensemble Forecasting (PDEF) aims to advance the science of dynamical meteorology and predictability research, and their application to ensemble forecasting promoting the development of ensemble applications and the transition into operations.
At the 32nd session of WGNE held 9-13 October 2017 at the UK MetOffice, in Exeter, United Kingdom, it was suggested to hold the next session in Japan, as WGNE had not been meeting in this part of Asia since 2010. PDEF has not been meeting in Asia since its establishment in 2014 and indicated an interest to meet partially with WGNE during the same week to address issues of common interest to both groups, in particular model errors (stochastic and systematic errors representation in ensembles and use of very high resolution simulations in this context).
Both WGNE and PDEF meetings will be held during period 9-12 Oct 2018, with around 1 day for a joint session. The meeting will aim to address topics of common interest which will advance the goals of the strategies of WWRP and WCRP, respectively. The joint approach will also allow for some savings as compared to holding separate sessions.
